Looking for a unique gift? Love all things Japanese? Then J-List is your go-to site on the Internet (if you’re 18+. For younger eyes or work safe web site, try J-Box).
I discovered J-List in college back in 1997 through my then-boyfriend. Due to my selective hearing, all I can recall was something about a guy named Peter (Peter Payne – the founder/owner/gaijin), living in Japan, and web site.
Since I love Japanese things (being born in Japan has a lot to do with it), I decided to check out the site. Back then, they had a lot of different anime, t-shirts, books and DVDs. My favorite section was titled “Wacky Things From Japan.” Not sure if this item was in this section, but they still have it — the Hello Kitty “Back Massager.” (wink, wink). There’s even more PG-related Hello Kitty-themed items, including housewares, school supplies and watches, just to name a few.
Today, the site is thriving with so much cool stuff that it blows my mind. If you’re into bentos, they’ve got different styles with different characters. Their selection of goods changes often, so keep checking the site.
I’ve ordered from them before, and all my items have shipped from Japan. Even though that’s quite the distance, the shipping is lightning fast and packed so nicely!
There was one item I ordered recently that they could not fulfill. They notified me very quickly to apologize. On top of that, they gave me a $10 credit for the “inconvenience.” I don’t know how I could love J-List more.
Check out J-List on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. Peter Payne also sends out e-mails filled with great stories about life in Japan, fun facts and more. I highly recommend getting on the e-mail list.
Bottom line: Constantly updated products selection of so many awesome things not available in the US, fast shipping, and excellent service. J-List is an addiction you won’t want to quit!
